The LA Clippers are gearing up to make a return to the ranks of contenders during the 2022-23 NBA season. They will have Kawhi Leonard back in the lineup after he missed the entire 2021-22 season because of a knee injury. Paul George will also hopefully be healthier, as he played in only 31 games.

With a strong supporting cast around their two stars, the Clippers are in a position to make some noise in the Western Conference next season. However, if there is one position that they will be seeking out an upgrade, it is the point guard spot.

For stretches of last season, Reggie Jackson was the only point guard in the rotation. The Clippers have other guys that are capable of running some offense and moving the ball, but as lead ball-handlers go, it was Jackson and little else.

Given their salary cap and tax bill, their options could be limited. But, what if they engaged a team such as the Brooklyn Nets in a deal for Kyrie Irving? That is what Bleacher Report believes is the bold move that the LA Clippers can make this offseason.

Irving could become an unrestricted free agent as he has a player option for the 2022-23 season worth $36 million. He can sign a new deal with the Brooklyn Nets for up to five years and $245.6 million, but Brooklyn reportedly is unwilling to sign Irving to a long-term deal given his inability to remain on the court and unpredictability.

On the court, Irving is worth a max deal without a second thought. However, there is a lot more that goes into handing someone a max deal and the Nets currently aren’t comfortable giving one to Irving as a result.

If the relationship sours and they part ways, the Clippers should get involved in the sweepstakes to acquire him. The front office in Los Angeles has done an excellent job acquiring depth on mid-tier contracts, which can be used to build a compelling trade package.

Some combination of Norman Powell, Marcus Morris Sr., Ivica Zubac, Luke Kennard and Reggie Jackson may be enough to get the Brooklyn Nets to the negotiating table. The biggest thing that the Nets would have to figure out when discussing a deal involving Irving is how it impacts Kevin Durant.

But, that isn’t of concern to the LA Clippers, who would be looking to add a third max player to the two All-Stars they already have. Including Kyrie Irving in a lineup alongside Kawhi Leonard and Paul George could make the Clippers title favorites next season, as they would still be able to field a competitive roster around them.
