Detriot Pistons Receive: F Talen Horton-Tucker, G Kendrick Nunn, F Stanley Johnson, 2027 First-Round Pick (LAL), 2028 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks receive: F Jerami Grant
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G Jalen Brunson
Jerami Grant’s name has become a staple in trade rumors. It makes sense. He’s a star-level contributor on a team that’s unlikely to need one for another few seasons.
Generally, when such a high-quality player finds himself on one of the league’s worst teams, the trade rumors follow. This deal finds the Mavericks deciding that it’s more beneficial for them to add scoring in the frontcourt than it is to pair the prodigious Luka Doncic with a quality backcourt mate.
Meanwhile, the Pistons would surely be interested in this deal if they like what they’ve seen from Talen Horton-Tucker. That’s far from a given. The 21-year-old wing shot just 26.9% from three-point range in 2021-22. He has potential, but he doesn’t profile as a player who’s likely to overcome that kind of poor shooting in other areas.
At the same time, they’re getting two first-round picks in the process. Granted, they won’t convey for years. That’s fine. By the time these selections are in the near future, the Pistons may be looking to swap them for a star.
