Brooklyn Nets receive: Jakob Poeltl, Doug McDermott, Keldon Johnson
San Antonio Spurs receive: Ben Simmons
In many ways, Keldon Johnson is like a version of Devin Vassell who’s already actualized his potential. They’re both versatile 6’5 wings that can shoot and defend at a high level.
That impacts each team’s calculus in choosing between these two packages. If the San Antonio Spurs believe Vassell is a season away from hitting Johnson’s trajectory, they may choose to gamble on that occurrence.
If they strongly prefer Johnson, they may opt to concede draft capital to acquire Simmons instead.
Of course, the Nets are in a win-now position. They may be largely indifferent to draft capital. They’d probably favor Johnson’s proven production over Vassell’s potential. They’re receiving a wing who just averaged 17.0 points per game while shooting 39.8% from distance and providing rugged defense here.

That’s in addition to the same two role players they acquired in the next deal.
On the other hand, Johnson still doesn’t quite qualify as a star. If the Nets need a bigger name for Ben Simmons, these two sides may need to get a third team involved in a trade.
