3 Linked Suitors For Gary Harris In NBA Free Agency

Shooting guard Gary Harris is entering NBA free agency this summer on a high note. After his shooting stroke disappeared for a few seasons, he was able to re-find it during the 2021-22 campaign with the Orlando Magic.

Harris knocked down 38.4 percent of his attempts this past season, his best 3-point percentage since he connected on 39.6 percent during the 2017-18 season. He is a career 36.4 percent shooter from long-range, but from the 2018-19 season through the 2020-21 season, he made only 33.7 percent of his attempts.

The renaissance could not have come at a better time, as the 27-year-old will be looking to cash in on free agency this summer. While the number of teams projected to have cap space is limited, Harris should be able to land a good contract with his 3-and-D style of play.

Where could the Michigan State product end up signing? Three teams have been mentioned as a possible landing spot and all three are places that he is familiar with the Magic, Denver Nuggets, and Indiana Pacers.

The Orlando Magic are familiar with Harris based on the 81 games he has played with the organization the last two seasons. While Orlando is rebuilding, Harris is a veteran that the players on the team like to have around.

That could be worth retaining him, as another hot shooting season would turn him into an excellent trade chip down the road. He was shopped ahead of the 2022 NBA trade deadline, but his contract made him difficult to move.

The Denver Nuggets are where Harris began his career with. He spent the first 6.5 seasons in the Mile High City after being drafted No. 19 overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. Having championship aspirations with Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. expected to be healthy next season alongside Nikola Jokic, Harris would provide a much-needed upgrade on the wing.

Harris was born and grew up in Fishers, Indiana. A homecoming with the Pacers is something that could be on the table, but Indiana is also rebuilding. They may not want to dole out a contract to Harris, instead, focusing on the younger players already on the roster.

The Indiana Pacers have a bit of a logjam already on the wing. But, some trades this offseason could alleviate that and then put them in a position to target a player of Harris’s caliber. Like for Orlando, he would be a great trade chip for Indiana at the deadline should they sign him.
