Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
Generally speaking, adding Kevin Durant doesn’t require a lot of justification.
The Phoenix Suns do this deal because they figure it gives them the best possible chance at an NBA championship. Even at 33, Durant is the best player involved in this transaction.
Of course, he’s not the only quality player here. Losing Mikal Bridges stings. He garnered serious consideration for Defensive Player of the Year in 2021-22. The Suns wouldn’t be giving him up for no reason.
On the other hand, Kevin Durant is a pretty good reason. The added benefit of this deal from Phoenix’s point of view is that they get younger. Paul is Durant’s senior by four years. If Durant’s still got a few years of prime basketball left, the Suns could extend their championship window with this deal.

They’ll need to replace their outgoing players. They won’t be able to on an equal value basis. Still, making up even a portion of their production should be worthwhile in the process of adding Durant.
