In all likelihood, the Charlotte Hornets would favor this deal. It’s really a matter of whether the New Orleans Pelicans feel the same way.

After all, Hayes is significantly younger and more athletic than Valanciunas. He’s also developed a semblance of a three-point shot. He feels like an ideal big man to pair with LaMelo Ball, but he’s also arguably a better fit alongside Zion Williamson.

With his length and vertical leap, he’s an inherently better rim protector than the ground-bound Valanciunas. At the same time, Valanciunas is, at this stage in their careers, a generally more productive player. He’s got more offensive polish. The Pelicans could prefer to lean into offense in their bid to build a contending team.

Either way, there’s an obvious framework for a deal here. The Hornets need a big man, and the Pelicans have one to spare.
