The Phoenix Suns suffered one of the most embarrassing losses in NBA Playoff history on Sunday evening. They were hosting the Dallas Mavericks in Game 7 of their second-round series and put forth a truly embarrassing performance.

Dallas won the game 123-90 at the Footprint Center, leading by as many as 46 points in the game. That deficit is the largest in the last 25 years according to ESPN Stats and Information research. The 60 points that the Suns lost in Games 6 and 7 combined is the second-largest score differential in those games since 1962 when the Warriors beat the St. Louis Bombers by 62.

This is the second consecutive season that the Phoenix Suns were eliminated after taking a 2-0 lead on their opponent. They lost four consecutive games to the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021 NBA Finals after going up 2-0 and lost four out of five to the Mavericks this year.

The loss once again brings up the question of whether or not Chris Paul will be continuing his career. Paul was ineffective in the final five games of the series, which is a big reason that Phoenix played as poorly as they did.

After averaging 23.5 points and only two turnovers in the first two games of the series, Paul struggled mightily. He averaged only 9.4 points per game with 3.6 turnovers the rest of the way after celebrating his 37th birthday on May 6th.

That will once again lead to some questions about his basketball future. He has now lost four consecutive Game 7’s in his career and failed to lead his team in the biggest moment for the second straight year.

Despite those shortcomings, Chris Paul sounds as if he will be coming back for at least one more season with the Suns.

The Suns will have to regroup this offseason and figure out a way to get over the hump. The Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets are probably happy that the Suns’ defeat will take some attention off of them after questions about their future arose from their performances as well in the 2022 NBA Postseason.
