The Boston Celtics acquire one of the 10 or 15 best players in NBA history with this transaction. Yes, he’s 33. The C’s are pushing all their chips in with this one. They’re assuming that they’re a Kevin Durant away from the NBA championship.
That feels like a fair assumption. This group had a 12.8 Net Rating from the All-Star break until the end of the season. That was the best mark in the entire Association. Which, of course, begs the question: why break them up?
Well, the playoffs are where the stakes really raise. If the Celtics can’t escape the Bucks with Khris Middleton sidelined, they’ll have to face some harsh truths. Specifically, they’ll have to concede that they’re not serious contenders. In all likelihood, they’ll tinker with the roster, adding a role player or two to shore up their depth.
