Why The Brooklyn Nets Would Consider It
The Brooklyn Nets would be cutting their losses here. Having grown tired of rostering a player they can’t rely on, they’ve decided to move on.
The return here isn’t ideal, but again, Irving is a distressed asset. The Nets could be putting themselves in a position to trade for (yet) another star with this deal.
Between the picks they received for Harden and these ones, they’ll have almost made up all the draft capital they sent to Space City. They’ll have moveable contracts attached to solid veterans in Dinwiddie and Hardaway Jr. It’s entirely possible that the Nets could just package all their picks with contracts to land a new, vaccinated star.
In the meantime, this deal is intriguing for them. Hardaway Jr spent most of last year rehabbing an injury. If he’s ready to return to form, he’s a great floor spacer to put alongside Simmons. Meanwhile, Dinwiddie makes up a portion of the production they’ve lost in Irving. He’d probably function as an elite sixth man with Simmons running point.

It may not be a dream come true for this Nets front office, but if they’re exasperated enough with Irving, they may feel they’ve got no choice.
