Detroit Pistons Receive: G Derrick White, F Grant Williams
Boston Celtics Receive: F Jerami Grant
About that Grant/Williams comparison…
This deal sees the Pistons swap their 3-and-D power forward for a younger model. It’s a smart move for a rebuilding team. There was a time when Jerami Grant was widely perceived as the type of utility player that Grant Williams is.
With proper development, Williams’ development could take the same trajectory.
Derrick White is essentially a throw-in. At 27, he’s not a prime target for the Pistons. At the same time, he’s a solid shot creator who could contribute to the team right away.
Having added two lottery picks by the beginning of next season, the Pistons may not feel like outright rejecting quality veterans in a bid to tank.

Of course, by that logic, why move Grant at all? It’s a fair question. We’d answer that adding a young player like Williams who fits with Cade Cunningham in terms of on-court product and timeline is worth the cost.
If that’s not enough for the Pistons, there may be another package the Celtics could offer to pique their interest.
