NBA Executive Sees Mavs, Heat, Suns As Anthony Davis Trade Suitors

Anthony Davis, Los Angeles Lakers, NBA Trade Rumors

Plenty of people have speculated about what the Los Angeles Lakers could do this NBA offseason to improve their roster. There isn’t much that they can do in free agency as they are lacking cap space to sign players away from other teams.

The only real avenue the Lakers have to improve their roster is making trades. Unfortunately for them, they do not have many assets to build a trade package around to bring in talent. However, they do have the potential to make a blockbuster deal should they make Anthony Davis available.

Los Angeles would love to move on from Russell Westbrook, but he isn’t likely to return anything of real value. Davis, on the other hand, could net the Lakers some good players and draft capital to help round out their roster.

While they would be hard-pressed to receive a package on par with what they traded to acquire him from the New Orleans Pelicans, the Lakers should still be able to receive some good assets in return.

One anonymous general manager that spoke to Heavy.com believes there is no truth to the media saying Davis has no market.

“Look, it is beauty in the eye of the beholder. But he is an elite talent and he is 29 years old,” the GM tells Deveney. “Everybody wants him, everybody thinks that if they get their hands on him, they can keep him healthy, etc., etc. …Now, can you get the kind of offer the Lakers gave up when they traded for him (in 2019)? No, of course not. But a team like Chicago, where he is from, they would bend over backwards to get him.”

29-year-old All-Stars with elite talent rarely come available in the NBA. Teams would jump at the chance to acquire Davis, especially at what could be a reduced price because of his injury history.

Another team that the general manager mentioned as a possible landing spot for Anthony Davis is the Dallas Mavericks along with the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat.

“Dallas, putting him with (Luka Doncic)? Of course, they would. Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, any team that really wants to take that next step. The injury is a risk, but the payoff you get if you can keep him on the floor is worth it,” the executive explained.

Dallas has been on the search for an All-Star running mate for Doncic since they acquired him during the 2018 NBA Draft. The Kristaps Porzingis experiment didn’t go as planned, but they would look to seize an opportunity to add another All-Star alongside him.

Acquiring Davis wouldn’t be cheap as the Dallas Mavericks would have to part with some draft capital, likely taking at least two first-round picks. They are lacking in young, high-upside talent, but can make up for that with plenty of veterans that would make for good fits alongside LeBron James.

Los Angeles could also use this as an opportunity to clear some long-term money off the books, acquiring some expiring contracts.

Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell would be on the table as expiring deals. Reggie Bullock, Davis Bertans, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Spencer Dinwiddie could all be used to help match salary. Even a sign-and-trade involving Jalen Brunson may be something that interests both sides.

The Dallas Mavericks should be all ears to whatever the Los Angeles Lakers are willing to discuss when it comes to a Davis deal. Pairing Davis with Luka Doncic would give the Mavericks one of the best duos in the NBA and make them title contenders for years to come.

The Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns both already have effective big men, but could achieve all the greater results in the event an Anthony Davis trade were to be available.
