Mavericks Could Land Collin Sexton To Pair With Luka Doncic?

This NBA offseason will be an interesting one for the Dallas Mavericks. They were able to lock up Dorian Finney-Smith to an extension during the season, working out a four-year, $52 million deal right after the trade deadline. They were not as successful in working out a deal with Jalen Brunson.

Brunson is also heading into unrestricted free agency this summer. He is expected to land a deal that pays him at least $20 million annually and the Mavericks will do everything they can to retain him.

However, no one ever knows how things will shake out in the offseason. Until a player puts pen to paper on a contract, anything can occur. The potential is there that Brunson will sign elsewhere this offseason despite such a limited number of teams projected to have cap space.

If the team loses Jalen Brunson, replacing him will be very difficult. The Dallas Mavericks do not have cap space to spend, so they will have to get creative when filling out the roster.

One avenue would be working out a sign-and-trade with Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton, as Bleacher Report believes Dallas is a surprise landing spot for the scoring guard.

There were a lot of rumors last offseason that the Cleveland Cavaliers could look to move Sexton as they were far apart in negotiations. He was coming off of a season in which he averaged 24.3 points and 4.4 assists per game, so it made sense that he was looking to maximize his earnings. However, a torn meniscus this season has complicated things.

Collin Sexton played in only 11 games before being sidelined by the injury. Darius Garland has made it known that he is looking to sign an extension for less than the max so that the Cavaliers’ front office can retain some key players, one of them being Sexton. Being more than $23 million under the luxury tax, Cleveland will retain the Alabama product should they want to.

If they decide they are okay with moving on, Dallas would make sense as a landing spot. He would be a great fit alongside Luka Doncic in the backcourt, especially if Brunson moves on this offseason.

The Mavericks have some players that could be of interest to the Cleveland Cavaliers, such as 2020 first-round pick Josh Green. Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber and Reggie Bullock could also be used to help match salary depending on how big of a deal Collin Sexton lands. Draft capital can be included as well.

The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly not interested in facilitating a sign-and-trade deal involving Jalen Brunson should he leave, so it would be ironic if they had to go down that path to try and upgrade the roster to replace him if he ends up elsewhere.
