Damian Lillard is a throw-back. He doesn’t seem to have any interest in forming a superteam. Winning an NBA championship doesn’t seem to be the goal: winning an NBA championship as a Portland Trail Blazer is.
That’s all well and good. It may not be particularly realistic.
As constructed, the Blazers are not contenders. By all accounts, they’re hoping to change that this offseason. They’ve got the ammunition to broker a trade for an impact player like Jerami Grant or Julius Randle. Will that be enough to put them over the top?
It feels doubtful. It’s difficult to imagine Lillard, Grant, and supporting players getting past any number of the starrier teams in the Western Conference. The Blazers don’t have a realistic means to add a third star. The jig may be up.
