Charlotte Hornets Receive: C Jonas Valanciunas, G Devonte’ Graham
New Orleans Pelicans Receive: F Gordon Hayward, 2024 First-Round Pick (Lottery Protected – CHA)
Assuming the New Orleans Pelicans get Zion Williamson back for 2022-23, they’re about to have a logjam.
As it stands, Jaxson Hayes has been busy authoring a breakout season at his 4 spot. That’s fine. The Pelicans can just bump him up to the 5, right?
Well, there’s a problem with that. A 6’11, 265 pound, Lithuanian problem.
Jonas Valanciunas is an NBA starter. At this point, he’s probably a fringe All-Star. Last season, he averaged 17.8 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. His 36.1% accuracy on 2.2 three-point attempts per game added a new weapon to his arsenal as well.

This deal allows the New Orleans Pelicans to free up room for their franchise player in the frontcourt. It also nets them a first-round pick: this one comes lottery-protected.
At 30, Valanciunas probably has less trade value than either Myles Turner or Mo Bamba. He still lands the Charlotte Hornets a starting-caliber big man, making this a win-win trade.
