Brooklyn Nets Receive: C/F Robert Williams III, F Gordon Hayward, 2024 First-Round Pick (BOS), 2024 First-Round Pick (CHA), 2027 First-Round Pick (BOS)
Charlotte Hornets Receive: C/F Al Horford
Boston Celtics Receive: F Kevin Durant
With this deal, the Brooklyn Nets basically resign themselves to a rebuild. We can assume that they’ll be trading Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons in separate transactions.
Crazier things have happened. Again, the Nets just got swept in the first round. Durant is 33 and it’s starting to show. This team is not in a great position.
With this trade, they restock some much-needed draft capital and acquire a 24-year-old defensive anchor. Depending on what they get for Irving and Simmons, they could instantly pivot into one of the best young cores in the NBA.
For that matter, they could keep Simmons. He’s only 25. Opting to build around him could lessen the pressure he currently seems to be buckling under. With a more future-focused mindset, the Nets could afford to be patient with him.
