Making the Case: Miami Heat

The Miami Heat have a championship-level roster already and are currently trying to prove it this postseason. It doesn’t hurt to add more talent for any team.

Looking beyond this season, though, Miami will have to accomplish some extremely clever financial finagling. Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Duncan Robinson, and Kyle Lowry are all signed through the 2023-24 NBA season and already command most of the Heat’s cap space each year.

They’ll have six players hitting the market this summer, and Tyler Herro will need a new deal after the conclusion of next season.

This trade allows them to stay in title contention, shed Duncan Robinson’s possibly overpaid contract, and prevent them from having to extend Max Strus — who will likely be worth much more than his current $1.7 million/year figure. Harrison Barnes’s contract is up after 2022-2023 and will clear over $18 million off of the books for Miami.

Aside from the ledger, Barnes will bring a variety of on-court benefits to the Heat as well. He’s a strong perimeter defender with the size and versatility to fit right in with Miami’s hard-nosed mentality. He can space the floor on offense and provide some secondary playmaking and selective shot creation.

Swapping Duncan Robinson for Harrison Barnes in their starting lineup should give the Heat upgrades across the board aside from maybe spot-up shooting.

All in all, this move would be a precocious way for Miami President Pat Riley to manage his salary table and perhaps even increase their title chances in 2022-23.
