Why The Dallas Mavericks Make The Trade
Frankly, it’s hard to say.
Losing Jalen Brunson stings. He was looking like the secondary ball-handler the Dallas Mavericks have needed ever since drafting Luka Doncic. This deal might represent a step backward in pursuit of two steps forward for them.
It’s probably still worth it. Gobert is that impactful. Not only would he revolutionize an already strong Mavericks defense, but he’d benefit their offensive attack as well. He’s one of the best pick-and-roll finishers in the NBA. On paper, he should be a tremendous fit with Doncic.
The team will miss Brunson. Spencer Dinwiddie is a skilled guard, but he’s probably not qualified as a secondary ball-handler.

Still, with an attack centered around Luka and Gobert in the pick-and-roll, the Mavericks should become an attractive destination. They should be able to find a Brunson replacement in free agency, or on the trade market.
If, that is, a player becomes as unhappy with their situation as Gobert appears to be in Utah.
