Why Chicago Bulls Make This Trade
With an anchor of Rudy Gobert’s caliber, the Chicago Bulls would still be able to get stops if either Lonzo Ball or Alex Caruso were to miss an extended period of time in the future.
Caruso and Ball led a defensive renaissance in Chicago, helping to take this team to the playoffs for the first time in Zach LaVine’s tenure. While they’re unquestionably capable of locking down opponents, the brand of high-pressure, rotation-reliant defense that the Bulls have to play with Vucevic in the middle isn’t exactly a sustainable recipe for success.
Having Gobert in the backline while Caruso and Ball fly all over the court to pressure ballhandlers and disrupt passing lanes might just make for one of the best defenses in the league, if not NBA history.
While losing Vucevic’s floor spacing and back-to-the-basket game hurts on offense, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine should be able to pour in more than enough buckets to get dubs.

Rudy Gay gives Chicago another versatile two-way player that would bring experience and consistency on both ends of the court.
The fit between DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gobert as two players who prefer to be in the paint on offense is worth questioning, but Gobert’s vertical spacing and DeRozan’s proclivity for hitting tough mid-range jumpers should make that an easy solve.

Giving up on Patrick Williams, a young wing who at times resembles Kawhi Leonard to a tee, stings, but this trade could legitimately make the Chicago Bulls title contenders. Chicago should pull the trigger without a second thought if this deal is on the table.
