3 Names Linked To Celtics As Potential NBA Free Agency Targets

Celtics, NBA Rumors

The Boston Celtics look like one of the few legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference in the early going of the 2022 NBA Playoffs. They have handled business in their first two games against the Brooklyn Nets, protecting homecourt while heading to Brooklyn with a 2-0 series lead.

The team has a great young duo that they are building the roster up around in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. While there has been speculation that they could look to break that pairing up eventually, the time for that to occur is not now. Instead, they need to keep improving things around them.

The Celtics are successful because they have a stingy defense and people have bought into Ime Udoka’s game plan offensively. It resulted in them finishing second in the Eastern Conference.

Wherever this year’s playoff run takes them, the Celtic should look to continue building on that foundation. Over at Bleacher Report, they compiled a list of three free agents that the Celtics should consider targeting.

One of them is already on the roster in Sam Hauser. He is someone that the team should look into retaining for his 3-point shooting ability. Shooting costs a lot of money, look at the deal Duncan Robinson got from the Miami Heat, so keeping a player as affordable as Houser makes a lot of sense.

If the team doesn’t want to disrupt the chemistry too much, another glue guy would be a smart addition. Kyle Anderson was mentioned as one and he would fit that role masterfully. He does a little bit of everything, filling numerous roles for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Anderson is a versatile defender, capable of locking down both wing and frontcourt spots. In a pinch, he can provide some small-ball center minutes as well. Offensively, he has worked hard to improve his spot-up shooting and is a strong secondary playmaker.

Sticking with the playmaking theme, third on the list of potential candidates was Ricky Rubio. Backup point guard has been a bit of an issue for the Celtics and Rubio would fill that role perfectly.

He was having an excellent season with the Cleveland Cavaliers before tearing his ACL in December. That injury likely cost him millions of dollars, which is something Boston can take advantage of.

If Rubio settles for a one-year deal worth the mid-level exception, similar to what Dennis Schroder signed for, during the 2021 offseason, the Celtics would be in business when it comes to courting Rubio and fitting him into the salary cap.
