The Los Angeles Lakers are going to be on the hunt for roster upgrades this season. The 2021-22 NBA season was a disastrous one in large part because of how mismatched the skill sets of the players on the roster were.
This offseason Rob Pelinka, if he remains the general manager, has to do a better job of evaluating the players and how they will fit together. The 2021-22 roster was impressive in name value, but a lot of the players were beyond their prime.
Carmelo Anthony and Malik Monk were the only real hits from this offseason. Retaining either of them will prove difficult as Anthony may join a team that is closer to competing for a championship. Monk played so well, that he may have very well priced himself out of Los Angeles with the offers he should field.
The biggest miss was acquiring Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards. He never found his footing in Los Angeles and received a lot of the blame for how things materialized. While he didn’t play as well as we have become accustomed to seeing, he was far from the only player that failed to produce.

Being unable to foresee that his skill set wasn’t a fit around LeBron James and Anthony Davis was something Pelinka whiffed on. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That should be the approach whoever is running the front office should take, as there is a tried and true formula of how to build a roster around James.
