3 Bold Trade Ideas Involving Lakers’ Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis, Los Angeles Lakers, NBA Trade Rumors

The Los Angeles Lakers should be in full panic mode if they weren’t already. The roster is old, expensive, and deeply flawed. LeBron James is still winning his tug-of-war with Father Time, but each passing NBA season pulls the King closer to the meridian line.

With how much power LeBron holds, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him force his way off of the team if Los Angeles doesn’t build a winning roster around him for next season.

But personnel upgrades will be tough to come by. The Lakers have no financial flexibility to work with, with over 72 percent of their salary cap tied up between LeBron, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook.

Between their mid-level exception, biannual exception, and veteran minimum contracts, Los Angeles has a few avenues to make upgrades within the margins of their roster. Their depth last season, though, surprisingly wasn’t the biggest issue. While they could have gotten stronger contributions from their role players, it was two-thirds of their “Big 3” that really disappointed.

Russell Westbrook has quickly become one of, if not the utmost, worst contract in the league. Owed $47 million next season — $3 million more than James — he’s become an inefficient, turnover-prone, hot-or-cold, glorified role player. While it’s clear that the Lakers would be better off without Russ — as he’s a horrible fit next to LeBron — his price tag makes him nearly impossible to trade for good value.

LATEST NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Why Los Angeles Lakers Should Explore Anthony Davis Trade

Anthony Davis has seen his play plummet since their championship in the 2020 bubble season; his 3-point shooting in particular has fallen off of a cliff. While he’s still a dominant force when he’s on the court, his injury troubles continue to plague him and the team. Davis hasn’t eclipsed 40 games played since the NBA’s first COVID season.

With the Lakers’ lack of assets and Anthony Davis’ proclivity for injury, perhaps it’s time for the Los Angeles Lakers to trade him. Here are three bold deals to get it done.
