Obi Toppin’s NBA career to date is a textbook example of the limitation of scouting. Heading into the 2020 Draft, Toppin was widely regarded as a dynamic offensive player who may struggle on defense at the professional level. So far, he’s been the exact opposite.
The 9.0 points per game Toppin averaged in 2021-22 isn’t blowing anybody’s mind. Appreciating Toppin’s value requires a look under the hood. His Defensive Box Plus/Minus of 0.3 from this past season is an impressive mark for a sophomore.
The eye test matches the data. Toppin is a dynamic run-and-jump athlete at 6’9, 220 pounds. He leverages his gifts by covering significant ground on the defensive end. He also has a knack for positioning. His defensive value is already strong. If he can put it together on the other end, the Knicks may have a two-way stud on their hands.
Unless that is, they choose to deal him elsewhere.
