Russell Westbrook is an enigma. It feels almost impossible that a player could produce such a critical mass of raw counting stats, and still arguably not contribute to winning NBA games. Yet, here we are.
His Los Angeles Lakers will miss the play-in tournament. He bears considerable responsibility for their shortcomings. His fit with LeBron James came into question the moment the Lakers acquired him last offseason. Troublingly, it’s hard to identify a clean fit for Westbrook anywhere.
That has to be an indictment on the veteran point guard. Westbrook is a first-ballot Hall of Famer but barring a late-career transformation, his legacy may always reflect his inability to play with others. The Lakers may struggle to unload his contract this year for that very reason.
On the other hand, they may not. Westbrook’s name will always have a cache. Some financially focused front office may not be able to resist a box office boon.
