The calculus for the New York Knicks is similar in this one. They’re swapping Barrett, Fournier’s contract, and draft capital for a star guard. They’re adding Cam Reddish in this package because Bradley Beal’s contract is more substantial than Mitchell’s. Reddish is required to make the money work.
Which is arguably significant. Reddish was a heralded high school prospect who has struggled to impact the pro level. Advanced metrics consistently paint a bleak picture of his defense, and his three-point accuracy has waxed and wained since he entered the league.
He’s still only 22-years-old. If the Wizards are forced to deal Beal, they’ll be triggering a full-scale rebuild. Taking a gamble on a young player like Reddish should be appealing to them in those circumstances.
This deal would require Bradley Beal to accept a sign-and-trade, as he has a Player Option heading into this offseason. It’s unclear whether that would be his preference.
