After gaining the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference just a year ago, the New York Knicks disappointed in the 2021-22 NBA season. Unable to build on their momentum, the Knicks once again find themselves in the lottery.

One key to their playoff appearance was Julius Randle, who has also been key to their struggles in 2022. Randle has regressed from the shooting improvement he showed in 2021, and as a result is on thin ice in New York.

Julius Randle is scoring 4.0 fewer points and dishing 0.9 fewer assists than during his NBA All-Star season. His efficiency has also suffered, as his field goal percentage is down from 45.6% to 41.1%. Randle’s 3-point shooting in particular has fallen off a cliff. After shooting 41.1% from deep last season, Randle shot just 30.8% on his 3s this season.

As Randle’s relationship with the Knicks continues to be tested, the Hornets have been brought up as a potential trade destination. Charlotte could flip intriguing young pieces to the Knicks in the deal and would bring in a scorer coming off a campaign with averages of 20.1 points per game in Randle to pair alongside LaMelo Ball.

In his Charlotte tenure, Hornets star LaMelo Ball has only played alongside one 20 point per game scorer, with Miles Bridges scoring 20.3 ppg in his breakout season this year. Randle would be a proven scorer to pair with Ball, who has proven to be an elite passer thus far in his short career.

Randle’s presence in the frontcourt could be big for Charlotte next season to add size inside. He could be an intriguing option in two-man game situations with the Hornets, too.

While Julius Randle has appeared to have worn out his welcome with the New York Knicks, he is still an effective scorer, and could be a fitting frontcourt piece for many different NBA teams. If teams engage the Knicks for a Randle trade, the Charlotte Hornets could be a promising fit.
