Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ regular season finale against the Denver Nuggets, it was reported that Frank Vogel would be fired as the team’s head coach. Even though he led them to an NBA Finals victory just two years ago, Vogel could not keep his job. Now, with a widespread search about to begin, the name Mark Jackson has been mentioned as a potential candidate to watch.
That’s right, Jackson is seeing his name get back into the potential coaching search rumor mill. Most fans won’t like that and won’t take it seriously, but Jackson could be an intriguing fit for the Lakers.
Lake Show Life suggested that Jackson could be a candidate for the Lakers’ job. Here is the reasoning they gave for adding his name to the list of potential coaches to watch.
As a high-end former player, the ESPN broadcaster would likely be a favorite candidate of James and Davis. Add in the fact that the Lakers love their big names, and Jackson could very well be at the top of the list for Jeanie Buss and company. The reality of this possible hire could simply depend on whether Jackson has any interest in leaving the announce desk.

Let’s be honest, Jackson is far from the favorite to end up getting the job. Other names like Quin Snyder and Nick Nurse are much more likely to be at the top of the Lakers’ list. However, Jackson’s name and being a former NBA star should give him at least a chance to get into the interview process.
During his three years as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Jackson racked up an impressive resume. He went 121-109 in those three years, but he was the first architect to help build what the Warriors became. Stephen Curry has been very open about his love for Jackson as his former head coach.

One thing is for sure, which is the fact that the Lakers cannot get this hire wrong. There are major question marks about LeBron James’ immediate future with Los Angeles and Anthony Davis could also find himself trying to get out if things don’t turn around quickly. A guy like Jackson is known for bringing players together and creating winning teams.
Expect to hear Mark Jackson’s name come up throughout the NBA offseason. The Lakers should at least give him an interview and it would be interesting to see what he could do with the roster. However, at this point in time, it seems like a very long shot that Jackson would actually end up getting the job.
