The San Antonio Spurs are heading into a play-in matchup on the road against the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. While their season isn’t over, it is never too early to begin preparing for the NBA offseason. With that in mind, some believe that the Spurs could end up targeting Wisconsin point guard Johnny Davis in the 2022 NBA Draft.
Most fans are going to be frustrated with this connection. San Antonio already has a very deep rotation of young guards. However, a selection of Davis could signal a big trade involving names like Lonnie Walker IV, Devin Vassell, and Josh Primo.
Over at Hoops Habit, the idea of drafting Davis was brought up for the Spurs. Granted, Davis may go too high in the draft, which could force a trade up if San Antonio desperately wanted to add Davis.
Davis is certainly going to be a great pickup for some lucky team in the NBA Draft. He put together a massive season for the Badgers this year and has a very bright future ahead of him. Many believe that he could develop into a lethal scorer and potential superstar at the NBA level.

During the 2021-22 college basketball season with Wisconsin, Davis ended up averaging 19.7 points per game to go along with 8.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists. While his playmaking skills need improvement, the offensive game is there for him to be dangerous, which makes him an intriguing NBA Draft fit for many teams. Davis shot 42.7 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 30.6 percent of his three-point attempts.
Granted, there are plenty of areas that the talented guard will need to improve. But, there will be plenty of time for him to make those improvements.

Even though the possibility of the Spurs being able to land Johnny Davis seems slim, this is an intriguing fit to think about. Should San Antonio have the chance to take him, they absolutely should. Being able to use some of their other young guards in a trade to improve the front-court would have to be a thought.
Expect to see the Spurs enter the offseason with an aggressive mindset. They aren’t too far away from contention and getting a prospect like Davis in the 2022 NBA Draft could help them get there very quickly.
