New York Knicks Receive: G Tim Hardaway Jr., F Dorian Finney-Smith, 2024 First-Round Pick (DAL), 2027 First-Round Pick (DAL)
Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Julius Randle
If this deal feels underwhelming on both ends to you, congratulations on identifying a perfect compromise.
Dealing Randle will inevitably sting for the New York Knicks. His performance this season has many questioning whether his 2020-21 success was an aberration. It’s likely to have depreciated his trade value: if anything, the Knicks would be lucky to receive a pair of first-round picks.
Neither of the veterans they’re receiving here does much to move the needle. Hardaway Jr. is a nice floor-spacing wing, assuming he returns to form after recovering from injury. He’s just more of a floor-raiser than a ceiling-raiser. Without a high-end playmaker alongside him, his value is minimal.
Finney-Smith is cut from a similar cloth. He’s a strong defensive wing, but at 28, he’s not likely to be a cornerstone player for a suddenly rebuilding Knicks squad.

The New York Knicks are in this deal strictly for the draft capital. If they want interesting young players, they may be able to get them.
It just might cost them one of those first-round picks.
