While some teams are gearing up for a playoff push, others are preparing for a busy offseason. One NBA organization that should be happy about the way they’re trending heading into the summer is the Detroit Pistons.

Only a few years into their rebuild, the Pistons are establishing a good long-term trajectory. They appear to have the next pillar of their franchise in Cade Cunningham, and young players like Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart continue to progress in their development.

The next step for Detroit is bringing in pieces that can help solidify this newly-built foundation. Amid recent reports, it looks like they have already begun identifying these players.

In a recent story for The Athletic, James L. Edwards III reported the Pistons are interested in acquiring Dallas Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson this offseason:

“Jalen Brunson is a tremendous secondary ballhandler who can create his own shot, is a terrific spot-up shooter and posses great basketball instincts. He’s also a free agent this summer, and the Pistons have real interest in him, per sources.”

Jalen Brunson saw a larger role with the Dallas Mavericks this season and made the post of the opportunity. His 16.3 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and 4.8 APG are all career-highs.

From the Detroit Pistons’ perspective, targeting Brunson makes a lot of sense. At 25-year-old, he is on the cusp of his prime.

Seeing how well he has played alongside Luka Doncic in Dallas, Brunson would make a fine secondary guard in Detroit next to Cade Cunningham. If acquired, the Pistons will have solidified their backcourt of the future.

While Brunson would be a good fit on the Pistons, Detroit will have their work cut out for him this offseason.

Given the career year he’s had, the young guard will certainly have more than a handful of suitors in the open market. One thing is for sure, no matter where he ends up, Jalen Brunson is due for a hefty payday this summer, whether by the Dallas Mavericks, or a different team.
