As we approach the final stretch of the NBA regular season, all eyes are on the playoffs. This season, there are multiple teams that have a chance to make a serious run at the title.

In the Western Conference, many see it as a one-team race. The Phoenix Suns have been the NBA’s top team in the regular season, and most believe they are en route to their second-straight NBA Finals appearance. Their 63 wins are head and shoulders above the rest of the competition.

While there’s no denying the West runs through Phoenix, Magic Johnson has his eyes on a different team.

During a recent appearance on ESPN’s ‘Get Up,’ the Hall of Fame point guard cited the Dallas Mavericks as a team to watch out for come the playoffs.

“With that Porzingis trade and Dinwiddie coming over to Dallas, that made them a better team,” Johnson said. “I like Luka, how he’s playing, that was a great game yesterday in Milwaukee. Dallas is sneaky good. Great coach in Jason Kidd, watch out for Dallas. They can beat any of these teams. They are that explosive on the offensive end and are playing great defense now.”

The Mavericks are not a bad choice as they’ve managed to get hot at the right time. Since the All-Star break, their 15-6 record is on par with the likes of the Suns and Boston Celtics. In that same stretch, they have been a top-ten defense in terms of defensive rating.

At only 23-years-old, Luka Doncic has proven he is not scared of the bright lights of the postseason. Through his first 13 playoff games, he is posting averages of 33.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 9.5 assists while shooting close to 50% from the field. Pairing this absurd production with an improved defense around him and the Mavericks are going to be a tough team to deal with in a seven-game series.

They might not be a clear-cut finals contender, but the Dallas Mavericks are certainly a dark horse team to watch during the Western Conference playoffs.
