James has always been loyal to his hometown and the storyline seems lined up for it to end where it began.
The difference this time around is the Cavaliers are building something. When James left the first time, the franchise was down until he returned.

Now, the Cleveland Cavaliers are a playoff team and have other big contracts to build around. Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley have emerged down low while Darius Garland could be the next player extended.
If James were to return, he would play at a high level but it would be the ultimate distraction and sideshow. The front office would have to decide if this is something they would want. If it would hinder the progress and growth of the team, it does not seem worth it.

Joining the Cavaliers would be the ultimate retirement tour if LeBron James decided to end his career in Cleveland. If he was ever able to help the team win another championship, the documentary would basically write itself.
