Ever since the 2020 NBA championship, Anthony Davis’ tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers has been rife with injuries and disappointment.

The Los Angeles Lakers (31-48) came into this season with high expectations, but have fallen short. The storied franchise has been eliminated from playoff contention after a tumultuous regular season. Davis doesn’t attribute this to much more than sour injury luck, though.

“I think the biggest thing that I think about personally is what we could have been, had we stayed healthy all year,” Davis said. “What could we have been. … Guys feel like, ‘OK, what could we have been if I was healthy all year, [LeBron James] was healthy, [Kendrick] Nunn was healthy.’ You think about those things.”

Anthony Davis is correct in pointing out the Lakers’ inability to stay healthy this season. 78 games into the season, the team has just four players who have appeared in at least 60 games. Star LeBron James has played in 56 games, while Davis has suited up for just 39.

“We put this team together and it looked good on paper,” Davis continued, “but we haven’t had a chance to reach that potential with guys in and out of the lineup.”

While the names may look good on paper, the team has struggled even with the stars on the floor. LeBron James and Anthony Davis have an 11-11 record when sharing the floor this season per Statmuse. Last week, the duo shared the floor during a 114-111 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans that all but ended the Lakers’ play-in hopes.

It’s possible that this Lakers roster could have developed better chemistry with more time on the floor together. However, the .500 record with LeBron James and Davis in 22 games doesn’t inspire hope that they would have lived up to the “good on paper” roster, as Davis puts it.

After a tough season for the Lakers, many are questioning the talent of the roster. Anthony Davis is not one of them though, as he blames injury luck for the Lakers’ losing season.
