While their season has ended in disaster due to injury, the Cleveland Cavaliers were one of the top storylines in the NBA this year. They had little expectations coming in and managed to take the basketball community by storm.

Not only did the Cavaliers more than double their win total from last season (43), but they are on pace to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017-18.

This meteoric leap would not have been possible if not for the play of Darius Garland. In just his third season, the 22-year-old emerged as one of the league’s brightest young talents. Garland is currently averaging 21.6 points, 8.6 assists, and 3.3 rebounds, all career-highs.

As we approach the final days of the regular season, debates regarding awards are becoming a daily topic. When it comes to Most Improved Player, many already have Memphis Grizzlies’ guard Ja Morant penciled in as the winner.

That being said, an NBA executive recently told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype why Garland should get more consideration.

“Darius Garland is on pace to join NBA Hall of Famer and all-time great Magic Johnson as the only players in NBA history to finish a season averaging 20+ points, 8+ assists, 46+ percent from the field and 90+ percent from the foul line.”

Having your name alongside a player like Magic Johnson is not bad company to be in. Along with this huge bump in production, Garland also had to carry a lot of responsibility.

With Collin Sexton and Ricky Rubio suffering season-ending injuries, it was on him to be the lead guard every night. Garland embraced this challenge and did a phenomenal job leading the charge for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Darius Garland has some stiff competition but certainly belongs in the running. Between his All-Star campaign and leading his team to the playoffs in only his third season, few guys have a more eye-popping case to come away with Most Improved Player.
