Does this trade make sense for the New York Knicks?
The 2020-21 season is beginning to look like a “one-hit wonder” for the Knicks, as they are once again heading back to the drawing board in search of ways to surround Julius Randle and RJ Barrett with talent.
Evan Fournier, Derrick Rose and Alec Burks are not bad players for this team in any way, but they are not the difference in the Knicks finding success, especially late in the season.
Adding another star to this team is essential and while Russell Westbrook may not be the best fit, the Knicks might as well gamble with him during the 2022-23 season because the worst thing that happens is that they do not improve and they will have a ton of cap space to play around with in 2023.
By trading for Russell Westbrook, the Knicks will save themselves nearly $64 million in total over the next several years and the cap space they would open with Westbrook’s expiring contract would allow the Knicks to pursue at least one max-level player in 2023 free agency.
