Knicks Open To Cam Reddish Trade In Offseason?

New York Knicks, Cam Reddish, NBA Trade Rumors

The only trade that the New York Knicks ended up making this season was acquiring Cam Reddish from the Atlanta Hawks. They landed him along with Solomon Hill and a future second-round pick, in exchange for Kevin Knox and a future first-round pick via the Charlotte Hornets.

It was a deal that many fans were excited about as Reddish has tantalizing potential. He stands 6’8” with a 7’1” wingspan. He has the tools and athleticism to be a terror defensively and was regarded as one of the better shooting prospects in the 2019 NBA Draft.

While he has been unable to put things all together in the NBA, he has shown some flashes. The four games that he played against the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021 Eastern Conference Championship showed just what kind of impact he could have on a game.

Knicks fans were hopeful that he could bring that to their rotation, but finding minutes has been difficult. Quentin Grimes emerged as a rotation player just as the Reddish trade was coming together, which put him behind the eight-ball. Finding minutes for a player in Reddish who was traded for someone outside of the rotation is not easy.

He was finally getting consistent minutes recently with injuries on the wing, but then Reddish got injured himself. He suffered what is being called a right shoulder injury after a hard fall attempting to block a shot in the game against the Sacramento Kings.

The New York Knicks didn’t provide any further details, so Cam Reddish could be sidelined for a little while. Is there a chance that was the last time we will have seen him in a Knicks uniform?

According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News during an appearance on the HoopsHype Podcast, it very well could be.

“I think they’re open to trading him. They don’t want to trade him because they just gave up a first-round pick for him. If they get anything less than a first-round pick back for him, that would symbolize the trade was a big mistake already. I don’t think they want to make that concession. They want to give Cam Reddish another year. He’s under contract for next season. They don’t have to give him an extension. I don’t think they will based on what they’ve seen from him so far. He will be a restricted free agent if they get that far in 2023.”

It would be uncharacteristic for a front office to give up on a player in such a short period of time, but it really depends on what is being offered. There was chatter about the Los Angeles Lakers being interested in him at the trade deadline and some teams were in on him before the Knicks landed him.

At the very least, the Knicks would be looking to get a first-round pick back for him. He could have a huge role with the team depending on how the offseason shakes out. If they move on from veterans such as Evan Fournier or Alec Burks, Reddish could find himself in a position to start or be the sixth man off the bench.

The only reason the New York Knicks should consider trading Cam Reddish is if it provides an immediate upgrade to the rotation. Should a team offer New York a point guard in exchange for him, they would likely seriously consider pulling the trigger.
