Every year some players enter NBA free agency that experts have wide-ranging opinions about. A player that could fit that mold this offseason is New York Knicks center, Mitchell Robinson.

Robinson is eligible for an extension with the Knicks, but it looks like he will be hitting the free-agent market this summer. With such a limited amount of teams having cap space, the Knicks should find it a little easier to retain him should they want him back.

Some executives believe he can land a contract that pays him between $12-13 million per season. If that is all it takes to sign him, the New York Knicks cannot let him go. But, some teams will be willing to overpay to add talent from other teams.

During a recent episode of the HoopsHype Podcast, Michael Scotto revealed what one NBA executive thinks about Mitchell Robinson as he heads into free agency. While he has some red flags such as limited offensive versatility and injuries, there is a lot to like about Robinson as a player.

“He’s talented as a rim protector and elite on the offensive glass. He’s good offensively in the dunker area, and he can finish at a high clip, but he has no perimeter game and has a bit of an injury history.”

Robinson is a legitimate difference-maker in the paint. He has become a better rebounder throughout his career and is no longer as reckless defensively. His fouls per game have dropped for a third consecutive season, which has enabled him to be aggressive on defense blocking and altering shots.

On offense, he is limited to playing on the dunk spot, but when he gets an opportunity to score, he makes it count. Mitchell Robinson has made 72.3 percent of his shot attempts in his career and is up to 77.3 percent this season.

His limited offensive repertoire will turn off some teams, but there is no denying the impact that he can have defensively. For that projected price tag, he is well worth the investment. If he develops on offense, even getting one go-to move in the post, he will become that much more valuable.
