The Los Angeles Lakers have had a disastrous NBA season that has led to a lot of speculation about the direction the franchise could head in this offseason. The roster is not built to compete, which could lead to the firing of current general manager Rob Pelinka.

Figuring out who is pulling all of the strings within the organization has always been a little tricky. There is a lot of input from different people both in and outside of the organization. On Saturday during the team’s big win over the Golden State Warriors, one of those former influencers in Phil Jackson was present at the game.

Jackson has seemingly been out of the NBA since being removed as the president of the New York Knicks. However, according to The Athletic, he has not been fully out. He has reportedly been an unofficial consultant for the Lakers and has been in contact on matters with Jeanie Buss, his ex-fiance.

“Sources say Jackson, the Lakers legend and ex-fiancé of Buss, whose presence at Saturday’s win against Golden State was highlighted by the team’s Twitter account, has been in frequent contact with Buss about team matters all season long.

“The complicated and often uncomfortable dynamics surrounding the Westbrook situation, in particular, are known to have drawn his interest. As unofficial consultants go, they don’t get much more experienced or credible than Jackson.”

While Jackson is among the greatest head coaches of all time, he is the polar opposite when it came to being in the front office. The Knicks were a disaster when he was calling the shots in part because of his insistence of pushing the triangle offense on his coaches despite the game evolving beyond that.

As president of the Knicks, Jackson’s whiffs far outnumbered his hits. His entire tenure was a train wreck as he left the Knicks in a worse place than he joined them. He dismantled a roster that was just one season removed from winning 54 games, bringing in players that fit his vision.

To use Phil Jackson as a consultant, even in an unofficial role, seems like a bizarre choice given how things transpired with the Knicks. But, given the spot that the Los Angeles Lakers are in, they would likely take help from anyone that presents an idea to help get the team back among the elite in the NBA.
