The Los Angeles Lakers have struggled mightily this NBA season and things have gotten near rock bottom in recent weeks. They have a record of 27-35, are on a four-game losing streak, and have lost 11 of their last 14 games.

Things have gotten so bad the Lakers’ chances of qualifying just for the NBA Play-In Tournament are now in peril. Los Angeles is only one game ahead of the surging 10th place New Orleans Pelicans, who hold the final spot in the Play-In Tournament. They are two games ahead of the 11th place Portland Trail Blazers and 4.5 games ahead of the 13th place Sacramento Kings.

There is enough time left in the season that the Lakers could continue slipping down the standings if they do not get things figured out on the court. One of the players that have been the subject of ridicule throughout the season has been Russell Westbrook.

The trade to acquire Westbrook from the Washington Wizards has been panned as one of the worst of all time and could ultimately cost Rob Pelinka his job. To acquire him, Pelinka agreed to trade three rotation players in Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Montrezl Harrell in addition to a 2021 first-round pick.

Westbrook and the Lakers have been picked apart by the media all season and things are getting even louder with their recent performances. Los Angeles comes out flat for games, not bringing the requisite energy to win or even compete on some nights.

Following the game on Thursday night against the LA Clippers, who swept the Lakers this season, Russell Westbrook had a lengthy response about the season and going at someone who asked him about expectations for himself and the team.

“What did I envision? Is the season over? Is the season over? No? Thank you. What did you envision? Since you spoke for me, I want to know what you envisioned. You still haven’t answered my question. What did I envision? I want to know what you think my vision is. I have no expectations, that’s why you don’t know what I envision. The last 4 years I’ve been on 4 different teams. My vision of thinking everything is gonna be peaches and cream, that’s not realistic, that’s not life. So I come into every situation, start from ground zero and figure out along the way. I have no expectations of how things will work. I just try to find ways to best help my teammates and that’s about it.”

Well, whatever Russell Westbrook has been doing to try and find ways to help his teammates, he needs to re-evaluate. Nothing has seemed to work as of yet and the Los Angeles Lakers are running out of chances to show any life this season.
