Marvin Bagley III – Detroit Pistons

One of the more overlooked trades at the trade deadline this season involved the Detroit Pistons and the Sacramento Kings. In a four-team trade involving the Pistons, Kings, Bucks and Clippers, Detroit acquired former second overall pick Marvin Bagley III from Sacramento in exchange for Josh Jackson and Trey Lyles.

Bagley is in the final year of his rookie contract but was rumored to be traded from the Kings for quite some time. Many did not expect Marvin Bagley to finish the 2021-22 season with the Kings and ultimately, he did not, as he will finish the season in a Pistons jersey before becoming a restricted free agent.

This was a “minor” trade compared to some others made this season, but Marvin Bagley III has looked refreshed in Detroit and has played well for the Pistons in his limited time with the team.

Outside of Isaiah Stewart, the Pistons’ frontcourt has been a mess all year long, which is why Bagley could have a huge impact for them the rest of the way.

In 4 games with the Pistons, Marvin Bagley has averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and has shot 51.3% from the floor off the bench. The young forward has also scored in double-figures in three of the four games he has played in with the Pistons.

Not only does Marvin Bagley look comfortable with the young Pistons, but he fits their style of play nicely and can be a really solid complementary piece for this team to build with.

His long-term status in Detroit though is a little uncertain right now with Bagley approaching restricted free agency. However, it is expected that the Pistons are going to look to re-sign him, possibly to a three-year deal worth between $30 million and $40 million in total.

This was a very underrated acquisition by the Pistons, one that did not require them to give up any true long-term assets.
