The Dallas Mavericks decided to make a splash at the NBA trade deadline by moving Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards. With Jalen Brunson being the team’s second-best player this season, it was time for the Mavs to move on from a failed decision in Porzingis.
It has been a strong season for Brunson as he’s posting career-best averages in points (16.1), rebounds (3.8), assists (5.4), and steals (0.9) after fully taking over the starting point guard role in the Mavericks’ backcourt next to Luka Doncic.
The current focus for Brunson and the Mavericks remains to finish the 2021-22 season on a strong note. Dallas has failed to make it out of the first-round during each of the last two seasons and will look to put an end to that streak.
After getting a contract extension done with Dorian Finney-Smith, the Mavericks’ main offseason priority will be to retain the services of Brunson when he reaches free agency in the offseason.

Two potential suitors have already been linked to Brunson, including the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons. Both teams will have the necessary means to acquire him if he chooses to sign with them.
