The New York Knicks have been on an everlasting quest to figure out the point guard position. They thought that they had things figured out coming into the 2021-22 NBA season with Kemba Walker as the starter and Derrick Rose backing him up. That has proven to not be the case.

Walker was benched after 20 games and removed from the rotation. Injuries and players going into the league’s health and safety protocols led to Walker being re-inserted into the rotation and he played well for a few games. But, he has been ineffective for the most part, again battling some knee soreness as well.

Rose hasn’t played in a game since December 16th. He experienced soreness in his ankle and eventually underwent surgery. He isn’t going to return until after the All-Star break at least.

As a result, the point guard position has once again been a black hole for the Knicks. Tom Thibodeau has deployed Alec Burks and Immanuel Quickley there, but neither has found much success. The struggles become even more apparent in crunch time, as New York struggles to run their offense without a seasoned table-setter.

That has led to numerous heartbreaking, close losses as the Knicks cannot close games out. There were some discussions held before the deadline that would have led to the point guard issues being eradicated, as the team was linked to De’Aaron Fox of the Sacramento Kings.

No deal was reached, as the Knicks will need a miracle to turn things around this season. With the 2021-22 season quickly spiraling down the drain, some people will turn their attention toward the offseason. Is this when a point guard will be found?

There are fans still holding out hope that Damian Lillard will fill the point guard void in the Big Apple. However, the positive vibes that the team built with their run to the postseason last year seem to be wearing off.

According to The New York Post, the Knicks no longer hold the same appeal to Damian Lillard. Their struggles this season have seemingly lowered their chances of trading for Lillard. While he hasn’t requested a trade, the Knicks were the favorite to land him at one point.

The appeal of the Knicks changed faster than a New York minute. They were in a prime position to swing a big deal just a few months ago, but after taking a step back this season, the outlook is not as bright.

Leon Rose will have some work to do this offseason as they will have to try and move some of the veterans to balance out the roster, opening playing time for the younger players. However, until the team can land a long-term answer at the point guard position, things will always be tough for the New York Knicks.
