CENTERS

The big man market was not very vast at the trade deadline this season and many teams in the league really are not looking to make upgrades in their frontcourt. However, there are quite a few centers that could be bought out of their contracts or waived in the coming week.

Starting in Oklahoma City, the Thunder made no significant move at the trade deadline and they held onto veterans Mike Muscala and Derrick Favors.

Muscala is now in his 9th NBA season and has always been regarded as a valuable bench option in the frontcourt given his ability to rebound and shoot at a high level from the perimeter, as Mike Muscala has shot 37.7% from three-point range for his career. It is however unlikely that the Thunder will waive Muscala this season, especially given that he has a $3.5 million team option for next season that they could simply decline and let the veteran become a free agent.

Derrick Favors was another talked-about big man in Oklahoma City ahead of the trade deadline that the Thunder were looking to get a draft pick for, but no real trade talks ever materialized. Having a $10.2 million player option for next season, GM Sam Presti could very well look to reach an agreement with the veteran big man to let him join a contender this season.

The most notable name in the frontcourt that could be available in the coming days is Tristan Thomspon, who was recently acquired by the Indiana Pacers. Thompson’s future with the Pacers could very well come down to if Myles Turner is able to come back this season from his foot injury, but Tristan Thompson is a physical “brute-like” big man that can really aid a team on the offensive and defensive glass.

For his career, Thompson has averaged 8.5 rebounds per game and he is not really needed right now in Indiana with them having Goga Bitadze and rookie Isaiah Jackson. Should Tristan Thompson become a free agent, the Bulls and Lakers are two teams to watch as potential destinations for the veteran big man.
