The San Antonio Spurs have been the most active team during the 2022 NBA trade deadline. They have been involved in multiple deals and have just completed another one.
The Spurs have agreed to a deal that will send Derrick White to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Josh Richardson. Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium shared the trade details.
This is the second trade that the Spurs have been a part of already today. The first deal that they made involved the Toronto Raptors. San Antonio acquired Goran Dragic and a top-14 protected first-round pick in exchange for Thaddeus Young, Drew Eubanks, and a 2022 second-round pick via the Detroit Pistons.
It was circulating that the Spurs would look to move some players ahead of the deadline to help their rebuild and that is the route they have taken. San Antonio did a good job in the deal with the Raptors adding some draft capital and they will likely be doing the same in this deal with the Celtics.

White will help upgrade the Boston Celtics’ backcourt as a combo guard. White is averaging a career-high 5.6 assists per game this season as he took on more of a playmaking role in San Antonio.
He has been a solid 3-point shooter in his career despite a down shooting season thus far in the 2021-22 campaign. White also gives the team insurance in case they move on from Dennis Schroder or Marcus Smart, the current point guards in the rotation who have been mentioned in plenty of trade rumors as well.

For San Antonio, Richardson could slot right into the team’s rotation spot in place of Derrick White. He has been an integral part of Boston’s rotation, averaging 9.7 points per game and knocking down 39.7 percent of his 3-point attempts.
However, he could see his minutes shrink as the San Antonio Spurs are going to prioritize developing the younger players in Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell that they already have on the wing. Richardson has the 3-and-D skills that contending teams would love to add to the mix for the stretch run of the season.

It would not be surprising if San Antonio flipped Josh Richardson again before the deadline passes. They could be involved in numerous more trades, as starting center Jakob Poeltl is also garnering interest on the trade market with the Charlotte Hornets being a potential suitor.
