There are numerous players on the San Antonio Spurs that are garnering interest in the trade market. Players from NBA All-Star Dejounte Murray all the way down to backend rotation players such as Thaddeus Young and everyone in between have been mentioned in trade talks.

One of the players in between that is drawing significant interest is center Jakob Poeltl. The No. 9 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors is one of the most sought-after centers ahead of this year’s deadline and rightfully so.

Poeltl is in the midst of a career season with the Spurs. His averages of 13.3 points, nine rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game are all career-highs. He is also averaging 0.7 steals and 1.7 blocks per game as a defensive anchor for San Antonio.

Given how well he is playing, it is no surprise that he is garnering the interest that he is.

According to Marc Stein on his Substack, a paid subscription website, the Spurs have already turned down a deal from the Chicago Bulls and there is plenty of interest in the Utah product.

“The Spurs, league sources say, have rebuffed one Chicago offer for in-demand center Jakob Poeltl centered around a future first-round pick. As we’ve been reporting for weeks, Poeltl is among the most coveted centers in the league at a time numerous teams are pursuing them.”

In addition to the Chicago Bulls, the Charlotte Hornets make a lot of sense as a landing spot as they need an upgrade at the center spot. His first team in the league, the Raptors, is also interested in trading for him.

Poeltl has impressive stats, but that is far from the only reason that teams are showing a lot of interest in him. Being productive is great, but the fact that he is locked in through 2023 at a very affordable price, makes him an even more attractive trade piece for other teams.

Alas, for all of the reasons that he is a great trade candidate, those are all reasons that the Spurs would want to hold onto him. For a team that is in a bit of a transition, it makes sense for San Antonio to gauge the market and see what they can get for Jakob Poeltl.

But, they are in no hurry to make a move. If they do not get what they deem as fair value, they can wait until the NBA Draft to try and trade him again. His value would drop a little bit being shopped as an expiring contract, but he would still bring back a solid return package for the San Antonio Spurs.
