Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Boston should be willing to gamble at the trade deadline this season because they really have nothing to lose. They have various trade exceptions of $17.1M, $9.7M, $6.9M and $1M, plus they are not really a playoff threat right now. 

On the year, the Celtics are 27-25 and they have yet to string together more than three straight wins. They have not looked like the championship threat they usually are and until they add more talent to their roster, they are nothing more than a team who could win a game or two in a first-round playoff series. 

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown can only do so much for this team, which is why they need another primary scoring option like Jordan Clarkson. Not to mention, the best part about trading for Clarkson from Boston’s perspective is that they can absorb his contract using their $17.1M trade exception that was created from the sign-and-trade deal this offseason involving Evan Fournier. 

Marcus Smart recently signed a four-year, $77.1M extension with the Celtics, but getting out of this contract now and moving him for value makes a ton of sense. Other than defense, Smart does not bring much to the table to increase the Celtics’ chances of winning and he really has not been a reliable point guard for them this season.

Not only can Jordan Clarkson score, but he can facilitate and make plays for others as well, which is why he would thrive next to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown as the Celtics’ thor scoring option.
