This Blazers-Suns Trade Sends Robert Covington To Phoenix

The NBA trade deadline is just about a week away and the clock is ticking for the Portland Trail Blazers. At just 21-30 on the season and Damian Lillard possibly out for the rest of the season after undergoing abdominal surgery, the Trail Blazers’ chances of being a relevant playoff team are slim to none.

This season has not been a complete loss for them though to this point. Nassir Little, while he suffered a season-ending labrum injury in his left shoulder, emerged as a key young talent for the Trail Blazers at either forward position and Anfernee Simons has been one of the league’s breakout young talents.

These two will help represent the future of Portland as an organization, but interim GM Joe Cronin certainly has his work cut out for him ahead of the trade deadline.

In addition to entertaining offers for Jusuf Nurkic and Norman Powell leading up to the trade deadline, the Blazers are also expected to pursue a trade involving veteran forward Robert Covington.

Being in the final year of his contract and the Trail Blazers getting ready to go through some kind of a rebuild, now makes the most sense for the team to try and leverage Covington. Multiple playoff teams are said to be showing a level of interest in the veteran forward, one of which could very well be the Phoenix Suns.

Phoenix is currently an NBA-best 40-9 on the season and they have not lost a game since January 8. In fact, they have lost just that one game in the last month of action!

After losing to the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals just several months back, the Suns are playing with vengeance this season and are looking to stake their claim as being the best team in the NBA by winning a championship this year.

The Suns are the best team in the league right now and do not need to make a change to their roster, but they are about $7M under the tax line this season and could move some non-core players and a draft pick to acquire Robert Covington from the Trail Blazers.

Let’s take a look at how the Phoenix Suns could possibly get this deal done with the Portland Trail Blazers.
