Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
It is hard to say whether or not Tim Hardaway Jr. will return at any point this season, but the Mavericks do not have time to sit around and wait. Their offense is terrible and while they are a great defensive team, it is hard to imagine that they can win a first-round playoff series this season with Doncic and Porzingis being their only two key scorers.
This team needs another scoring threat and specifically, they need to add some real shooting threats on the perimeter to open up more space for Luka Doncic.
Buddy Hield would be an excellent trade target for the Mavericks this season, even though he is owed $61.5M through the 2023-24 season. This is less money long-term than they agreed to pay Tim Hardaway Jr. ($75M) in the offseason and Hield is a more reliable three-point shooter.
On the season, Buddy Hield is shooting 37.6% from three-point range (58th in the NBA) and is averaging 3.4 made threes per game, which ranks third in the NBA. Not to mention, Hield has also made a total of 171 threes this season, trailing only Steph Curry’s 215 made threes.

Dallas knows what they would be getting from Buddy Hield in this trade and by also getting rid of Dwight Powell, they will save themselves $10M that could very well go towards the efforts of keeping Jalen Brunson and/or Dorian Finney-Smith this season.
