The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the most dominant franchises in the NBA since the 1990s, but for the first-time in their franchise’s history, they have missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons the last two years.
Now, with them currently being 18-30 and outside of the playoff picture once again, the Spurs look like they will add onto this playoff drought and make it three consecutive seasons.
The reign of dominance the Spurs franchise has had over the rest of the NBA all of these years really is quite impressive when you look at their success as a big picture, but San Antonio is now rebuilding and looking to rebuild their image.
Young talents such as Dejounte Murray, Keldon Johnson and Derrick White have helped give the Spurs’ fan base some hope, but changes are on the horizon for this young group.

There is no set direction that this team is heading in right now other than towards picking in the lottery in the 2022 NBA Draft, which is why making moves to add more future value is going to be key with the trade deadline approaching.
Derrick White is a very interesting name to talk about because with him being 27-years-old and owed $68M through the 2024-25 season, he could very well turn into the asset that the Spurs look to leverage for more future value.
Now in his 5th NBA season, White is averaging 14.2 points, 5.6 assists and shooting 41.7% from the floor. However, he is shooting just 29.5% from three-point range, a career-worst for him, and the Spurs have a ton of other young perimeter players in development that they could turn to for production at a cheaper price.

Let’s take a look at a hypothetical trade package put together by Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz that sends White to the Pelicans.
