The Dallas Mavericks are one team that could be aggressive ahead of the 2022 NBA trade deadline. They are currently in fifth place in the Western Conference, but only 6.5 games separate them from the 10th place Portland Trail Blazers.

Dallas is in a good position to qualify for the postseason on the back of a surprisingly strong defense. Adding some offensive firepower would be a good idea, but they do not want to compromise their defense to do so.

Luckily for them, there are a few options that could be on the trade market that are two-way players. One of the guys at the top of the market is Jerami Grant of the Detroit Pistons, who is expected to have a robust market.

Numerous teams have been linked to Grant, who may not be healthy enough to get back on the court before the trade deadline. He is recovering from a thumb injury and will be re-evaluated in early February to determine when he will be able to return to the court.

Grant would be a great addition to the Mavericks lineup. He gives them another option at power forward should they start deploying Kristaps Porzingis at center. Grant is also capable of dropping down to play small forward should Jason Kidd keep Porzingis at power forward, which has been the case for a majority of the season.

But, Dallas may not be able to build a package as compelling as other teams. They are not overflowing with draft capital and don’t have a high-upside youngster still on a rookie deal. But, the one piece that could put them over the top is point guard Jalen Brunson.

On a recent episode of The HoopsHype Podcast, it was revealed that Brunson could be key to negotiations held between the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons. Jalen Brunson has some fans within the Detroit organization.

I’ve heard Jalen Brunson has some admirers in Detroit. They have cap space and are a team to keep an eye on towards the summer. If Dallas is able to enter the mix for Jerami Grant and acquire him, don’t be surprised if either Brunson or Finney-Smith is involved in a trade package. If Dallas is going to part with either player, they’re going to want an asset that helps them win now.

Of the two, Brunson would be the tougher one to replace as he has recently moved into the starting lineup and a lot of the players that have been linked to the Mavericks are forwards and big men, not point guards.

Brunson and Dorian Finney-Smith are both impending free agents, which creates unique situations. The Mavericks do not want to go into the luxury tax, which will be difficult to avoid if they want to retain Brunson or Finney-Smith.

If they do not believe they will be able to keep them, Dallas can use them to acquire some talent to help them win now. Jerami Grant makes sense as a target for the Mavericks, especially if they are going to part ways with a key rotation player in Jalen Brunson or Dorian Finney-Smith.
