Does this trade make sense for the Washington Wizards?
Dumping Davis Bertans’ contract is something that makes sense and it was a move that made sense as soon as they signed him to such a massive deal. Bertans had a great 2019-20 season with multiple career-highs in terms of scoring and shooting, but he is not an elite-level player and never will be.
Earning an annual value of $16M on this massive contract, Bertans is just simply not a player the Wizards could build around ever, so they should not have ever given him this kind of money.
Washington has dug themselves into a hole financially and now, they are going to have to give up key future assets to try and dig themselves out of it. Bradley Beal’s future is definitely up-in-the-air right now and as of right now, things are leaning towards him leaving Washington simply because they have not proven that they can win and compete at a high-level.
Until this occurs, there is going to be a strong chance that Bradley Beal either leaves in free agency or requests a trade after receiving a massive contract extension from the Washington Wizards.

Trading Davis Bertans does not move the Wizards under the salary cap immediately, but instead of being just about $1M from the tax line on the season, they would be close to $18M under the tax line and they would also create a massive sized trade exception for themselves to possibly utilize in the offseason.
Freeing up cap space and creating opportunities to target other big names to pair with Bradley Beal is a must for the Wizards this season, which is why everything for them starts with trading away Davis Bertans.
